About

Seeing birth within the context of a social model of health and wellness, as a midwife I seek to increase women and birthing people’s curiosity, confidence and trust in their ability to birth; and to share understanding of what birthing mammals need in order for the birthing process to unfold normally. We need to understand how hormones affect the mechanics of labour and birth, the fluid emotional phases of birth, the rites of passage, how the nervous system functions, how trauma is caused and prevented, how environments and those around us, impact the process.

The mother/birthing parent is the central person in the care dynamic and the relationship between them and midwife, is fundamental to how labour unfolds. I aim to create a calm, peaceful environment, in whatever birth setting, with any level of complexity or additional needs, to influence a positive birth experience, and transition to parenthood.

As a birth reflection facilitator, I hold a safe, supportive space for people to gently begin exploring their birth and postpartum experiences, with body awareness and reflective listening. I draw on years of teaching pregnancy yoga and Hatha yoga to integrate somatic practices so people feel safe and grounded throughout and gain practical tools for self soothing, self compassion, acceptance and moving on.  Individualised birth planning can also be an important part of birth reflection work, for some people.

  1. Hi Oli, did you have an ancestor Kit Silverwood Cope, was a POW in Colditz? Married to Bettina, used to live in SW3? If so we may be distant cousins. Email back if you like.
